Waterfalls

Where you have a river, look for waterfalls.

Water cascading down a rock face or leaping out to fall into a pool is always a fascinating sight. Some are very tall, or very wide; some have a large volume, others come in steps. Countries like to show the beauty of such river sights contained in their borders.

The top set:
  • US #568 Niagara Falls viewed from the Canadian side (Horseshoe F.)
  • US #C133 Niagara F. seen from the American side
  • Canada #225 Niagara F. as seen from the American side again.
The bottom pair:
  • Southern Rhodesia #31 Victoria Falls
  • Southern Rhodesia #39 Victoria F., with the date of a royal visit 12th May 1937, and cameos of King George VI & Queen Elizabeth

Cascades in Africa & Iceland (how's that for a pair?):
  • Rhodesia & Nyasaland #164, the eastern cataract of Victoria Falls
  • Iceland #170 Gullfors / Frimirki (Golden F.)
Three from Zambia:
  • #618 Chishimba F.
  • #619 Chipoma F.
  • #620 Lumangwe F.

From Argentina:
  • #462 Iguazu F.
  • #639 Iguazu F.
From New Zealand:
  • #604 Purakaunui F., 10˘, on the river of the same name, in the South Island. This image shows it at fairly low water, and the 3 tiers are visible (top tier is between trees)
  • #605 Marakopa F, 14˘
  • #606 Bridal Veil F, 15˘, in the North Island, it is a 55m ‘plunge’ type.
  • #607 Papakorito F, 16˘

From Australia:
  • #2926 Russell F., Tasmania
  • #2927 Jim Jim Falls in Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory
  • #2929 McKenzie F., with 2 streams, in Victoria state
From 3 different countries:
  • New Zealand #350 Sutherland F., 1904 ft – one of the highest falls in the world, with 3 distinct vertical “leaps”.
  • Reunion #131 - Cascade of Salazie has 2 leaps visible.
  • Papua New Guinea #731 Ambua F.

The last 2 cascades I will show:
  • Japan #Z125 - Shasui-no-taki Waterfall with 2 leaps shown. The “Z” in the catalog number indicates a ‘prefectural stamp’ issued by the national postal ministry to publicize one of the 47 prefectures of the country. In this case, it is for Kanagawa, which is in the Tokyo region.
  • Australia #1840 Nandroya F. in Queensland has a wide face with many separate parts.
These are only a few of the great number of waterfalls on stamps. Have fun finding more!
